VEP Supports the Purple Heart Veterans Education Act

The Veterans Education Project proudly supports the Purple Heart Veterans Education Act of 2025 (H.R. 790), introduced by Representatives Mike Levin (CA-49) and Dr. Greg Murphy (NC-03). This bipartisan legislation ensures that all Purple Heart recipients—regardless of when they receive their award—can transfer their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to their dependents.

Rep. Levin emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “After everything they have done for our country, veterans deserve access to the assistance, benefits, and services they are promised.” He further highlighted that the bill ensures that “no matter when a veteran receives their Purple Heart, they will be able to transfer their GI Bill benefits to their family members.”

Co-sponsor Rep. Murphy echoed this sentiment, asserting that service members awarded the Purple Heart after leaving active duty should have the flexibility to transfer their GI benefits. He affirmed his commitment to safeguarding veterans’ hard-earned benefits and emphasized that the bill ensures every Purple Heart recipient can support their family’s education and well-being through the transfer of these benefits.

Currently, veterans who receive a Purple Heart after leaving active duty are excluded from this benefit. By closing this gap, the Purple Heart Veterans Education Act rightfully extends educational opportunities to the families of those who have sacrificed for our country. We commend Reps. Levin and Murphy for their leadership and urge Congress to pass this critical bill in support of our nation’s heroes.

The Veterans Education Project is deeply grateful to Representatives Levin and Murphy for their dedication to this cause. Their bipartisan collaboration exemplifies a shared commitment to rectifying injustices and enhancing the support structures for our veterans. We also acknowledge the efforts of Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Thom Tillis (R-NC) for introducing the companion bill in the Senate, reinforcing the bicameral support for this crucial initiative.

As we reflect on the sacrifices made by our service members, it is incumbent upon us to ensure that their contributions are honored through comprehensive and inclusive benefits. The Purple Heart Veterans Education Act is a significant step toward fulfilling this obligation. We urge Congress to swiftly pass this legislation, reaffirming our nation’s commitment to those who have given so much in service to our country.
