The Veterans Education Project (VEP) proudly supports the Purple Heart Veterans Education Act (S. 342), introduced by Senator Patty Murray (D-WA). This bipartisan bill makes a long-overdue correction to the Post-9/11 GI Bill by ensuring that all Purple Heart recipients can transfer their unused education benefits to their dependents, regardless of when they received the award. This bill follows closely on the heels of Congressman Levin’s H.R. 790.
Currently, veterans who are awarded the Purple Heart after separating from the military are ineligible to transfer their earned GI Bill benefits. This creates an unjust divide between those who receive the award during service and those recognized afterward. S. 342 closes this gap and honors the full scope of sacrifice made by wounded veterans.
The Purple Heart represents extraordinary bravery. Our laws should reflect that by treating all recipients equally.
