The Veterans Education Project (VEP) is proud to support the Veteran Education Empowerment Act, bipartisan legislation introduced by Representatives Lois Frankel (D‑FL‑22) and Gus Bilirakis (R‑FL‑12) that would expand support for student veterans at colleges and universities across the country.
The bill would reauthorize and strengthen grants to help institutions establish, maintain, and improve Student Veteran Success Centers: dedicated spaces that provide veterans with academic advising, career counseling, disability assistance, peer mentoring, and other services tailored to the needs of those transitioning from military service to academic life. These centers also serve as hubs for community and connection, helping reduce isolation and improve retention and completion rates among student veterans.
Nearly one million veterans enroll in postsecondary education each year. Veterans often face unique challenges on campus, including adjusting to civilian academic environments, navigating federal benefits, and balancing family or work commitments. The Veteran Education Empowerment Act would ensure that schools have the resources to meet these needs and help veterans succeed in their academic and career goals.
VEP applauds the bipartisan effort behind this important legislation to ensure Veteran-friendly campuses are the standard and looks forward to working with lawmakers to advance it. By investing in Student Veteran Success Centers, Congress can strengthen the academic success and long-term outcomes of those who have served our nation.
